A lawyer for convicted killer Dennis Dechaine says officials in the case have agreed to another round of DNA testing.

That testing could specifically identify another suspect and lead to a new trial.

Dechaine is serving a life sentence for killing 12-year-old Sarah Cherry from Bowdoin in 1988.

His lawyer says a recent round of testing shows DNA that’s not Dechaine’s was on the girl’s clothing.

Friday Dechaine’s lawyer, the state prosecutor and the judge agreed to see if the evidence could be looked at even more closely to pinpoint exactly who’s DNA was found.

The evidence, along with the most recent test results, would be presented in Dechaine’s appeal for a new trial.

A date for that hearing has not been set yet.
